Denby Dale Bowling Club

Members Update following the Committee meeting held on 15 Feb 2024

1. Good news

(a) Green opening.

The green will open on Monday 4th March. Members need to be aware that the green will be booked on certain days for team friendlies/practices and some work on the green surround will be taking place. Members are asked to avoid using the green on Thursdays as maintenance work may be going on.

(b) Round Robins

These will start on Monday 8th  April 1.15 for a 1.30 start and Friday  12th  April 9.30 for 9.45 start

(c) Membership Fees

Fees are staying the same as last year !!

Membership fees were agreed at the Annual General Meeting to remain at £50 per member and can be paid now, by either cheque made out to Denby Dale Bowling Club or by Bank Transfer to Sort Code 40 36 08 Account 71464434. (Account Name Denby Dale Bowling Club) Please include your name(s) as reference in your payment.

Cheques can be given to Peter Taylor, our Treasurer, or posted to him at 217 Cumberworth Lane, Denby Dale HD8 8PR.

Membership fees to be paid by Friday 5th of April 2024.

2.  Getting the club house and green ready for the new season

All members are invited to come along and help out with work that needs doing in the clubhouse and around the green.

The first work party will be held on Saturday 2 March from 9.30 to around 12.00

The second one will be on Saturday 9th of March from 9.30 to around 12.00

Work will need to be done in the pavilion to clean it up and prepare it for opening, including cleaning the kitchen, toilets and windows.

We will need to tidy up the gardening areas and clear the vegetation on the river side of the fence sufficiently to enable a coat of paint to be applied to that side of the fence.

It would be helpful if members can bring some  gardening tools as we have a limited supply.

Tea and biscuits will be provided free of charge to all helpers.

3. Free compost (good quality!)

Members can take as much of the compost created at the bottom of the grass heap as they wish. You can access it from the car park

4. Increasing income for the club.

Committee members will be distributing leaflets and posting entries to social media outlets within the next two weeks. All enquiries will be handled by Peter Taylor.

5. Friendly Competitions

The dates for all these activities will be announced later

We are planning to run singles and mixed doubles knock out competitions this season.

We are planning to organise a day of mixed doubles – just turn up on the day.

We will also be repeating our successful Fun Day.

Keep your eye on the club notice board.

6. Coaching Sessions

As mentioned at the AGM we have arranged for Stephen Hawksworth from Penistone Bowling Club to come to Denby Dale to deliver 2 sessions of coaching for experienced bowlers.

Participants should have at least two seasons experience in league bowling.

Participants would be expected to attend both sessions to get the full benefit

The aim is to help people to develop into thinking bowlers who can assess each situation and identify their different options and then deliver the appropriate shot.

The coaching sessions will take place on: Saturday 30 March and Saturday 6 April Starting at 10.30 finishing by 12.30.

Stephen will cover different marks, turning over, stun and running shots, and firing.

There will also be an opportunity for bowlers to get help with particular aspects of their game that are causing them issues.

Neither Stephen nor his assistants will be charging a fee so the cost is free to members.

Anyone interested should let me know by email at alankitson@gmail.com

7. Membership Recruitment Campaign

We will be organising another membership recruitment campaign with local advertising. There will be taster sessions for potential new members during April. Keep an eye out on the notice for dates. Help would be appreciated

8. External Club Notice Board – the one by the gate

We will not be using this notice board to display team sheets any longer. Team sheets will continue to be displayed in the clubhouse as now. Captains now circulate their team sheets via emails or whatsapp. We will use the notice board to advertise the club to passers by. Having consulted with  team captains they support this change but one did mention that a few members use the notice board team sheets to see when the green is free for a practice.  These members can get this information from the clubhouse notice board. If this results in a problem for you please let me know.

9. Minutes of the meeting

Minutes will be displayed on the internal club notice board.

I hope you all have a very enjoyable season

Cheers

Alan
