Tales from the Gutter…

Tales from the Gutter…

Number 1 of an occasional series…

Bowlers do not give up when it rains. I’m always reminded of that when I see cricketers heading for the pavilion when it drizzles. Huh , I think, bowlers wouldn’t give up.
Ok , I know bowlers are not facing a bowl being chucked at them at 80 mph but even so…
I was reminded of that when we went to play a match in the Barnsley league. The rain was torrential and the Green was hidden amongst houses. Early arrivals were sent out to find the stragglers who, it turned out , had passed the Green five times and not realised it was there. Across a field , through a hedge and we arrived. Wet through!
The Green was…well , let’s say it reminded us again of how lucky we are to play on a suberb  Green in Denby Dale. The rain did not help.
The shelter allocated to us, the visitors, was just about big enough if we snuggled up a bit . So, those of us waiting to play snuggled and cheered on our fortunate colleagues who played in the first round.
Rain-playing strategies are many and varied. Hood up to protect hair. Hood down cos can’t see. Wipe glasses. Shake head at team members when you pass on the Green . Wipe glasses. Put up hood. Mutter to team members along the lines of “Are we mad.” Wipe glasses
There is of course the alternative strategy of “Pretend it’s not raining and just carry on in your tee-shirt” , but if you’re a lady of a certain age I wouldn’t recommend that one.
At some point one of the watchers decided to add a bit of humour, or maybe hysteria, to the proceedings by singing…totally appropriately..” Its raining men..”. This was quickly followed by “It might as well rain until September “ and “It’s raining….raining on my heart! “
The catalogue of rain songs was impressive. Pity we had to stop and go play.
We sang, we played and we won the match! A good day followed by a hot bath and whatever you fancy to drink.
I love Bowling!

When I decided a few years ago that I was never going to win Wimbledon I looked around for another sporting activity…and that’s how I found Denby Dale Bowling Club. I was a complete beginner whose only knowledge of the game was some idea that

Website Content.

Website Content.

Up to date content is important for any website we hope to update the site with new things fairly regularly. This is just a basic website for now, however, until the club decide how it wants to use it.

Perhaps we will include details of our teams progress in the leagues we participate in, or social event news. If there is interest (and willing contributors!) we can include a section on club history, awards for example.

If you are interested in helping create content, and are already a member of the club please let the committee know. If you’re a keen photographer and want to take some up to date, higher resolution photos for the site, that would be most welcome! Please get in touch through the Contact Us page.

If you wish you can comment below, with ideas for content.
